thikanaThikana, meaning “address” or “a place to return to” in Bengali, is a residential complex comprising of two unequal freestanding buildings on a corner rectangular site: larger and lower 10-story block-2A and smaller and taller 11-story block-2B.

DELIGHTFUL DUO

An oasis with a cosy domestic environment in the heart of Gulshan.

The pair stand tall on a rectangular corner site at the intersection of Roads 138 and 137, one block to the east of Gulshan Ave, the main north-south thoroughfare of Dhaka’s most central neighborhood of Gulshan-1, in close vicinity to several renowned restaurants and services alike.

Throughout the complex all spaces at the ground floor are devoted to communal functions with a reflection water pool alongside outdoor areas which are embellished by continuous lush landscaping in the deep verandas and on the roofs.

Most bedrooms (facing the south-east) and public areas of the residences have their own verandas where the seasonal winds and sun prevail. The layouts take into consideration privacy concerns, achieved by strategic placements of characteristic angled concrete walls at the windows of the living rooms and bedrooms, and at the verandas.

The traditional palette of materials- exposed concrete walls and deep ledges, handmade brick walls and infills, large floor-to ceiling glass windows, teak and iron wood accent walls and partitions, marble floors and walls, and stone paving – all of light, neutral tones, adorn this pair of buildings with an interesting playfulness of juxtapositions and combinations of in situ concrete and brick.
